Many of you developers must have heard about COBOL, that language that despite having more than 60 years since its creation, it is still useful and leaves so much to talk about.
Through this short post I come to explain the bases of why, is that
manages to continue being used in more than 90% of banks worldwide.
First of all we must understand what COBOL is and what it is for,
Common Business-Oriented Language is a programming language created in the 1959 with the aim of creating a universal programming language that could be used on any computer and was oriented
mainly to business, that is, to the so-called management informatics.
Now that you know the origin, I'm going to talk to you about why this language, and why it is used by most banks.
This language, being a low-level programming language, can only
be run on certain hardware, this makes hacking practically impossible, today after more than 60 years of its creation, there is no case of a hack in this language. But is this the only thing that remains alive today?
The answer is no, in addition to its security it is the fastest language that it never existed to carry out transactions, millions of transactions per minute.
Because of this, from my humble opinion, I consider that we have COBOL for at least 20 more years.
This was my first post on this social network, I hope you like it.
